Supporting communities toward better representation?

The West Papuan community working group posed a serious threat to the credibility of the Cultural exhibition by adding a component of money making in the exhibition. Throughout the time I have beeen working with them, they have held cultural nights which in discussions with other people have a monetary fume about them which might have turned people away. I raised this issue with them and amongst them I could see this concern had been raised , The following points were discussed:

1. How do we make money from this exhibition?

The exhibition since discussions and development has not been about money , its about community oarticipation and celebration of the West Papuan culture with other Melbourne communities.

2. How much will we charge?

The exhibition is about communing, a gold coin donation and other donations are welcome, if an element of money is the first encounter for attendees, then the exhibition is in some way compromised, be it a small way.


3. How can the community be confident in talking to people invited? most don't speak good english

Community members dont have to man posts, but be part of the exhibition and enjoy it?

4. If people want to buy paintings, should we sell?

It's up to painters, it is good to remember the long term vision of the community, toward Immigration museum representation

5. Are we safe from Indonesian agents? how can we be

Fear is an evil master
we are in Australia now
we cant' safeguard anyone besides noone goes around with security guards in the community

6. Should we get the media involved

Not sure, its good publicity
yes we need the media
