The article by G Burgess is aestheticall beutiful in prose and semantics! Working within the Refugee Brokerage program, I have reservations to his observation that " Australia is a country that is spiritually and Culturally diminishing" Of note reconciliation with the indegenous peoples and the treatment of refugees for example West Papuans who I work with. I have no doubt that history agrees with Burgess on this until maybe the advent of 2008 and arguably a new era launched when John Howard was voted out of power by Australians. The diminishing returns experienced after the discarding of the Keating government initiative, The Royal Commission Report-http://www.reconcile.org.au/getsmart/pages/get-the-basics/reconciliation-timeline.php-By the John Howard Government and then the acting in an election year 2007 on "The Little Children are sacred report" were evident.
The rejection of the Royal Commission report was arguably a step back into the dark passages of denial and buck passing in line of Australia moving toward rconciling the past with its indegenous folk. I see the Kevin Rudd' first initiative toward the reconciliation process with the indegenous people and the recent abolishment of Temporary Protection Visas amongst other silent initiatives as a grind in that slide and diminishment in spirit and culture. The fact that the government has single handedly held Australian hands and apologized to the Indegenous peoples and the abolishment of TPV's is definately an attempt at awakening the spirit if not showing spirit. As these things go, it leads to a question of how these acts have been received and embraced by the majority? The indegenous represantatives have acknowledged and applauded the spirit although of course the vitriole has been reserved for the uncompassionate opposition leader who dragged himself and the people he represents into the dark passages of spiritual and cultural diminishment.
The efforts of government and affiliated sectors, ie welfare and community, in settlement , capacity building, community development and CCD point to a holistic sense of the other. The mainstream's growing apetite for multi culti offerings may also be a signal to a growing tolerance. The history of Australia is migrant and Multicultural, surely the benefits of newly arrived cultures can be appreciated along the same alley as Lygon street, Jesaulenko, Underbelly, China town and the African zoo at Werribee. All these point to subtle encroachment of spirit and culture into the everyday that in the grind we sometimes fail reflect on their presence and meaning. The development of these Refugee communities and the bonding of newly arrived people in a shared energy to me reflects also a stage one process toward the enhancement and transporting along community lines into mainstream for its appreciation and consumption.
Indegenous aesthetics in relation to sustainability and the landscape is quiet interesting, I googled his works and there is a definate relationship with their situ as he describes in the article. Relating this to working with communities, it is intriguing that sympathy, as he notes, " as understood as power , is the beginning of understanding, for knowledge alone is not understanding."" the power to receive and as well as to give" in my mind is intrinsic to being an artist especially in working with the community. cont
