SkinnyTwin Theatre Community Projects and Creativity

In discussing project development, process and outcome in light of creativity, community participation and collaboration in light of CCD are clear challenges. I could not help but reflect on the CCD project I am doing with the West Papuans. Development, This project is informed by the community toward a need for community expression and participation. In discussing with them what they had in mind, they pointed out they were more interested in doing something together. It was tempting as a theat… Continue

SkinnyTwin Theatre Leadership group?

The new form of leadership seems to revolve around leadership group, they seem to me to act as a form of working group and reference group. Their overemphasized function seems to be around representation and disciplinary support to nominated and designated leader. It reminds me of the politburo of Robert Mugabe or George Bush's war council. It seems this group is definately an attempt to be incusive and reprersentative of the people the group represents? How though if its functionality is based… Continue

SkinnyTwin Theatre DISCOMFORT ZONE

working with young people from the horn of Africa, i attended afl training with them at Aredn street , as i had brought along my kit, i joined them in training and nothing more could have remined me of my 33 already lived years. most of them are teenagers and the coach facinated me, he was humble but authoritative but the group di not seem to hold any respect toward him. they constantly interrupted him, swearing, sniding each other, undisciplined. he obviuosly knew his stuff but had no experienc… Continue

SkinnyTwin Theatre "Facilitating Change" IN THE TIGERS MOUTH by Katrina Shields

An awesome insight into change and leadership. The definition of leadership I find interesting. " A willingness to think about the group as a whole and to offer some direction and influence in helping the group meet its goals". I feel its inclusiveness is also its exclusiveness, group dynamics in my view change all the time. It might depend on how often group meets, objectives of the group and more importantly if the leader has been choosen by the group [nominated] or an organisational conferral… Continue

SkinnyTwin Theatre Week 11: CCD worker can have a (recognisable) impact as long as the participants needs are met.

The impact the CCD worker might have can be arguably from the onset when the effort to engage with the community is initiated. Some communites have not worked proffessional workers along CCD prionciple and theory and just being in contact with one might itself be enough in awakening the realisation of potential. An awareness of their needs in the first place can mean a needs assessment has been done in light of the social and economic landscape of the community, then this initiative already sta… Continue

SkinnyTwin Theatre Community and the Artist, Ife, Profeit-leBlanc, Hull and Long, Sue Clark and A Richards.

As an artist, it is easy to get bogged down in your practice especially if you create and produce your own work. As a playwright, my work is inspired by my experiences and memories of Zimbabwe and what is currently happening there. As a CCD practitioner, it is a different situation with collaboration being central to the work. It is easy to have clear fetched ideas and frameworks as an artist when engaging with communities, the principles started by Jim Ife then act as guidelines when working wi… Continue

SkinnyTwin Theatre MULTIPLICITY OF THE WHOLE

The article by G Burgess is aestheticall beutiful in prose and semantics! Working within the Refugee Brokerage program, I have reservations to his observation that " Australia is a country that is spiritually and Culturally diminishing" Of note reconciliation with the indegenous peoples and the treatment of refugees for example West Papuans who I work with. I have no doubt that history agrees with Burgess on this until maybe the advent of 2008 and arguably a new era launched when John Howard was… Continue

SkinnyTwin Theatre week 11 How can conflict be embraced within a CCD context?

Sometimes conflict is necessary! As pointed out in the principles of CCD, " community workers need to be able to operate effectively in groups which require a broad range of skills" if a worker has the capacity to observe and be aware of group dynamics then it might be easier to prevent a group from going off track and helping them reach a consensus. Conflict then might be avoided or sometimes left to play itself out as long as it is within reason, but what is within reason? what damage can con… Continue

SkinnyTwin Theatre law of increasing opportunity cost?- Mapping the territory [ WEEK 1]

In the first lecture, a concept of “diminishing returns" was highlighted by Dean. If the model of learning encouraged and practiced in CCD is the enquiry model, then as students, we are encouraged to question, reflect and learn in a continuous cycle investigation of ideas and concepts. No less obvious than from the onset when the class grappled with the issue of the familiar influencing unfamiliarity and vise versa. It is obviously a class whose pulse will be firmly entrenched in debate, argumen… Continue

SkinnyTwin Theatre Converging streams-The community Arts and Sustainable Community movements. P.A. Shifferd and D. Lagerroos

Sustainable living has definitely shifted into the living room of every home, and resultantly has influenced the way I work as an artist. Because I use performing arts to engage with communities so as to complement the community’s inspirations to create, the impact is limited to my individual way of life. Because communities also are faced with more pressing issues like settlement and employment mainly, sustainability is restricted to the viability and the ongoing presence and development of the… Continue

SkinnyTwin Theatre The Myth of Development? Oswaldo De Riveiro and Understanding Community Cultural Development by Arlene Goldbard

The Myth of Development?, It is clear from Arlene's article that Sue's progressional presentation of CCD was well informed. The factors that have influenced the names of the practice as well as the influences on the practice are vast and go hand in hand with the last centuries speedy " development in all areas of our lives"+ The speedy growth toward ultimate domination by “Supranational companies" whose product seem to determine lives and the resultant impacts on the way of life [Culture?] Is… Continue

SkinnyTwin Theatre CCD Showcase by Horn of Africa Youth. VCA

The showcase by the horn of Africa young people in collaboration with the CCD department was an interesting, engrossing and challenging presentation. I loved the sincerity of the participants as an African and as an African in Australia, it was a buzz to see the stories of the old home land being brought to life with such vividness. This new land we call home can be tough, the pressures of settlement have the potential to scatter time and the urge to create. It was inspiring then to see these yo… Continue
